CROFTERS w/ JANET JONES - RARE 1975 LIVE LP EURO 50

'The Crofters at the Watermill Inn' (Sweet Folk and Country SFA 029) is sought after because of the guest appearance at this live gig of the hugely-collectible JANET JONES, singing the lovely "Wild Mountain Thyme".
This album was recorded on March 21st, 1975 in Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire and was the Crofters' first
LP. The vinyl is in excellent condition; the sleeve (vg+) is signed "...with all our lust" by two of the band, Alan (guitar) and Ian (mandolin).

CRYPTADIA - RARE PRIVATE PRESS 1974 ERON FOLK LABEL EURO 100

This is a very rare album "Cryptadia" (Eron 005) from 1974, on the extremely collectible micro-press label Eron (based in Deal, Kent). It features folk songs by Jenni Jubb and early music by the Anderson Singers and Musica Antiqua.
The instrumentation includes sackbut, krumhorn and psaltery, amongst others, so there should be something here to appeal to fans of Richard Harvey, Gryphon, etc.
There is an interesting 4-page leaflet insert with the LP which points out the influence of this music on Davy Graham, John Renbourn and even the Beatles!
The obscurity of this LP can hardly be overstated - I've recently seen a copy at auction for 140 pounds! But I'm starting this one off at a reasonable price and there is NO RESERVE.
Vinyl is in gleaming, near-mint condition, labels immaculate, the insert excellent, and the rather thin sleeve
a strong vg+.

Finn mac Cuill began at Stirling University in 1972 when Tony Ireland met Nick Keir and started playing gigs together. The first residencies were in Edinburgh, notably the St Clair and Doric Hotels. After a spell with Miriam Titteron as vocalist, Tony and Nick returned to playing as a duo, working with John Cairney and in a Folk and Poetry programme with Norman McCaig, as well as the usual round of pubs and clubs.

Soon they formed the Finn mac Cuill Folkshow with actors Colin Brown, and (latterly) Megg Nicol and Avril Stewart. This theatre group toured quite extensively in Scotland, and although the scripts were, with hindsight, crap, they were often quite well received. The logistical problems and personality conflicts in the Folkshow became too much, and after the infamous "Battle of Carrubbers Close" Keir and Ireland decided to return to a purely music- based act.
To this end they were joined by John Wilson.... a fine singer... on vocals, guitar and bass This line up produced the flawed LP "Finn mac Cuill".but toured reasonably successfully in the UK, Germany and Holland. It was not until Madelaine Taylor joined the group that the band really took off. The picture above shows that line-up at Blackford Hill Pond circa 1976...left to right: Ireland, Keir, Taylor, Wilson.
Together they produced the much better "Sink Ye Swim Ye" album. Before it could be released the band was involved in a nasty van accident and, although no one was seriously hurt, the bands finances and morale never recovered. Keir and Taylor played some gigs as a duo, but soon even that ceased. A hiatus of about a year followed until Keir and Ireland met again and , lured by the prospect of a tour of Germany persuaded Wilson back on the road and the last throes of the band began.

The tour of Germany, marked as it was by vile hotels, food poisoning, eccentric management and unsuitable venues proved nearly as devastating as the van accident, but a lifeline was thrown by 7:84 Theatre Scotland and the band joined them for tours of "Joe's Drum" and "Swings and Roundabouts", a happier experience altogether. With Ireland deciding to leave the UK and live in Germany the group was joined by Richard Cherns (later of RunRig and Theatre Alba). Cherns' undoubted instrumental skills failed to gel with the other members' music and when Keir left to pursue a solo career the band came to a halt.

FOLLY'S POOL - SAME - FOLK / PROG / COUNTRY / ROCK EURO 25

Track Listing
1. Folly’s Pool
2. Fallen Pony
3. Just A Memory
4. Jig In A
5. Before The Gates Of Elessaar
6. Kathleen
7. West Of The Skies
Here’s another little musical gem, this time featuring the indisputable talents of guitarist and singer/songwriter Steve Ono and his chums in Folly’s Pool. Folly’s Pool is another of the literally hundreds of private pressings which appeared in 1977 on the specialist label, Century Records (Century 44675), although it must be said that there can’t be many other bands on the label that attain this level of recording quality and impressive musicianship. Under the stewardship of Fresno-born Ono, the band takes us on a tour de force of acoustic-based rural rock with folk, prog and country influences often to the background. At times Folly’s Pool sounds like they’re trying to be The Eagles or Loggins & Messina, but in many ways this does the band a disservice as they have successfully created an individual approach to their music which often turns the ordinary into the exceptional (the cunning transformation from folk to prog of Jig In A is worth the price of admission alone) and the high standard of everything the band plays (the stunning electric guitar solos are particularly fine) makes this album one to play and savour. Unfortunately this was Folly’s Pool’s only album (although an EP entitled Bathing Caps Required was released in 1987) , but Steve Ono did go on to enjoy a career as a writer, producer and performer, working with the likes of War’s harmonica player, Lee Oskar, the harmonica master Eddie Gordon and Stevie Wonder’s former musical director, Larry Gittens. FollY’s Pool is an unusual album which could have achieved some commercial success had it been released
and promoted by a major label. Highly recommended

CHRIS FOSTER- Layers EURO 30

In the late '70's I released two widely acclaimed solo albums. 'Layers' (with guest performances by Nic Jones on fiddle) was voted best newcomer of the year for 1977 in the Guardian newspaper. 'All Things In Common' (with guest performances by Graham and Eileen Pratt) was released two years later.
Copies of the original vinyl albums have been virtually impossible to get hold of for many years
